Capital Project Update: Mayo Island Restoration Project

Mayo Island is transforming into a Natural Area Park that will reconnect residents and visitors with the James River while preserving the island’s natural environment and historic character. The Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities, in partnership with the Department of Public Utilities, is leading the restoration effort.
The current phase includes demolition of aging buildings and deteriorated infrastructure, site cleanup, stabilization, and preparation for future park improvements. Construction is expected to continue through October 2026.
Next Steps: Once complete, Mayo Island will feature walking trails, open green spaces, and restored native landscapes designed to support healthier soils, wildlife habitat, and the James River ecosystem. The project will create new opportunities for residents and visitors to experience the river while celebrating the island’s unique history and natural beauty.
Mayo Island will remain closed to the public throughout the demolition and restoration process to ensure the safety of construction crews and visitors. The City will continue to share updates as work progresses and future project milestones are reached.
The restoration of Mayo Island represents a long-term investment in Richmond’s parks and waterways, creating a renewed riverfront destination that honors the island’s past while creating new opportunities for recreation, nature, and connection to the James River.
Richmond INSPIRE in Action
This project supports the implementation of Richmond INSPIRE, the City of Richmond’s 10-year vision and action plan for parks, recreation, and community facilities. Richmond INSPIRE provides a community-driven framework for guiding future investments, including improvements to existing parks and facilities and the development of new parks, greenways, and recreation opportunities.
As projects move from planning into design and construction, specific improvements may continue to evolve based on available funding, site conditions, technical requirements, and community input.
