Capital Project Update: Little John Park

Community Leadership in Park Improvements
The Sherwood Park Civic Association has spent more than a year rallying their neighbors to make improvements to Little John Park, including conducting neighborhood-wide survey, and engaging neighbors with technical expertise to turn those survey results into visuals and plans. The park, located directly adjacent to Interstates 95 and 64 in Richmond’s Northside, has recently lost trees due to a highway exit expansion. Neighbors want to see many more trees planted on this site, focusing on native species, and areas for gathering and play. This true community-led effort has led to conceptual plans for park improvements that are headed to the City’s Urban Design Committee for review without the expenditure of any City dollars for their creation – leaving a larger budget for implementation of the plans.

Richmond INSPIRE in Action
This project supports the implementation of Richmond INSPIRE, the City of Richmond’s 10-year vision and action plan for parks, recreation, and community facilities. Richmond INSPIRE provides a community-driven framework for guiding future investments, including improvements to existing parks and facilities and the development of new parks, greenways, and recreation opportunities.
As projects move from planning into design and construction, specific improvements may continue to evolve based on available funding, site conditions, technical requirements, and community input.
